The USWNT took on Mexico for the final time before they fly to Japan for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
The US looked to execute from the beginning, and they did just that. In the 6th minute, the team opened the scoring from a Lindsey Horan volley off her right foot. In the 11th minute, Crystal Dunn sent in a cross for a diving finish by Carli Lloyd. The best sequence from the match for the USWNT followed shortly after. The play originally started in the backline and ended in a fantastic ball by Tobin Heath into Christen Press that should have resulted in a goal, however it was called off. After the game, head coach Vlatko Andonovski shared that the goal was called off because the referee blew her whistle inadvertently.
The team went on to score in the 37th minute on an own goal from defender Reyna Reyes and again in the 39th by Tobin Heath, who now has 2 goals in her 2 games back with the team.
The second half did not see any scoring from either side, and it looked like Andonovski may have been trying different scenarios with the players that came off the bench.
The USWNT will now travel to Japan and stay under strict Covid-19 protocols as they prepare for the Group Stage of the Olympics. The US will face a tough but somewhat familiar Sweden side in their first match on Wednesday, July 21, 2021, at 4:30 AM ET.
