Orlando Pride defeated 2-1 the defending challenge cup champions Portland Thorns that was coming to exploria stadium as the clear favorite to win this game.

When the lineups were announced, it was surprising to see that Portland did not start either Rodriguez or Weaver. Rodriguez had 83% completed passes in their last game and Weaved leads the league in assists. It’s safe to say that Portland underestimated Orlando and they paid that back big time.

In the first half, the Thorns went all in and were imposing their game to the Pride. The whole team helped the backline contain the Thorns’ mid that was on the onslaught. I even saw Leroux covering Petersen’s left flank at some point during the half. As the frustration grew for the Thorns, they left open gaps on both flanks. In the 19th minute, Marta threw a beautiful cross to Kornieck, who had an outstanding game, she headed it down and it was close. Orlando’s momentum was building up. In the 22nd minute, Kornieck threw a beautiful lobbed assist to Alex Morgan and she struck a GOLAZO that was heard around the league. Thorns were left stunned. Pride 1 – Thorns 0.

Portland started to dominate the possession of the ball but Orlando’s backline delivered greatly. As the thorns attacked, the Pride stopped them on their tracks just by being organized and properly applying pressure when Thorns’ players attempted to pass, forcing them to turn over the ball. As the Pride was on their highest momentum, Kuikka threw a brilliant cross through the right flank, to Simone Charley for the even score. Pride 1 – Thorns 1.

In the second half, as soon as the half started, Sydney Leroux hopped on a back pass turned over by Hubly and poked it in, making her second goal of the year and the 2-1 Orlando. The momentum was all Pride’s and well-deserving so. Sophia Smith was subbed in for the Thorns and as soon as she hit the pitch, she tried to find gaps on the Pride’s right flank. She was also looking for a long-range shot. In the 70th minute, Thorns subbed in Rocky Rodriguez and Weaver, in the attempt to disrupt the Pride’s dominance. Marisa Viggiano also subbed in for the Pride. Thorns had some chances but the Pride’s backline delivered and Harris also had a couple of key saves. No clear chances for the reigning challenge cup champs.

Orlando Pride won this game due to their determination and skill both in defense and attack. They made a statement to be heard throughout the entire league. The message, we are here to win a championship for the city of Orlando.
