Gotham FC faced off against Washington Spirit in the third game of the Challenge Cup. Both teams are known for focusing on possession in their playing style, so it was going to be a tough battle from beginning to end. A victory secured them a spot in the final on May 8th, otherwise, Gotham depends on the result against North Carolina Courage.
Gotham FC took the initiative in the first half. Carly Lloyd once again led the way for the team’s offensive power. However, it was Margaret Purse who created the most dangerous chances down her wing. She was responsible for two key actions that could have changed the game if they materialized. In addition, there were some moments when both teams struggled with their passing game. One of the positive points in terms of individual performances is Caprice Dydasco and her continued growth in confidence level throughout the tournament. Her solid defensive display was key in tonight’s game.
Washington Spirit displayed a pressing game in the second half. Gotham was challenged for the first time since their rebranding, showcasing how solid their defensive line could be. Washington also had a key match moment after Ashley Sanchez misplaced a shot from outside the box. Overall, the game displayed a very competitive game between two good teams. One could say that the score was fair.
Gotham will now face North Carolina Courage to secure their place in the final. The game will probably see the debut of Alexandra Long, who was announced as a Gotham FC player earlier today. “She has the experience and will add more quality to the team, the young players can also learn from her”. Gotham FC means business this season.
