The Chicago Red Stars took on Gotham FC at home on Saturday, May 22. The Red Stars were looking to bounce back from a tough loss to the Thorns last weekend.
Chicago was looking to attack from the beginning of the match. Red Stars forward Mallory Pugh took a shot in the 3rd minute that was blocked by the Gotham goalkeeper Sheridan. The Red Stars continued to pressure Gotham and in the 33rd minute, Pugh ran the length of the field and took a shot that just sailed over the crossbar. Two minutes later, forward Rachel Hill sent a nice ball into Kealia Watt that was blocked by the Gotham keeper. Gotham’s best chance of the first half came in the 41st minute on a header that went off the crossbar by Viens.
In the second half, Chicago came out with the same intensity as in the first half. They continued to attack Gotham and pushed the ball up the pitch. Sarah Gorden had a nice opportunity on a cutback, but it was blocked and sent out of bounds. Chicago’s last chance of the evening came in the 90th minute, but the shot was sent wide.
The Red Stars defense also played very well. They allowed 7 shots, with 0 on goal and 2 corner kicks in the entire match.
Once again, Mallory Pugh was the most active player on the pitch for the Red Stars, creating many chances for the team. However, Chicago still struggled to connect in the final third and put the ball in the back of the net. The final score was a 0-0 draw.
Chicago is on a short week and will travel to Kansas City to face them on Wednesday, May 26 at 7:00 PM CT.
