After the international break, the Red Stars look to continue to pick up points to remain in the playoff race. Their first test since the return game against the Portland Thorns, who are at the top of the table.

The beginning of the match saw Chicago control possession. They had a few chances to score early on from Casey Krueger and Arin Wright, but they were not able to pounce first. Instead, the Thorns were able to take advantage on a fast break situation where Christine Sinclair took a shot that went off the post and into the net. Just a minute later, the Red Stars were able to get one back when the Thorns keeper had come out of the box to block the first play but missed. At the half, the score was tied, and possessional was equal.

In the second half, the Thorns struggled to create their attack out of the midfield. Chicago smothered them and only allowed 2 shots on target throughout the second 45 minutes. The go-ahead goal for Chicago came in the 65th minute. Pugh’s defender was playing off her which allowed Pugh to dribble down the left side of the box and deliver a ball into Rach Hill who was able to head it home. With about 25 minutes remaining, the home team was able to hold on to their lead and complete the comeback.

This is Chicago’s first win over the Thorns since 2013 and it couldn’t come at a better time. The win and the 3 points moved Chicago up to fourth place temporarily as week 18 kicked off in the NWSL. The Red Stars will remain at home and return to the pitch to face the Orlando Pride on Saturday October 2nd at 6:30 pm CT (7:30 PM ET).
