Kansas City lost at home (Legends Field), in disappointing fashion, their last game of the NWSL challenge cup against an OL Reign squad that wasn’t their flashy self either. Final score was 2-1 Reign.
6 minutes into the first half, Malory Weber shot a top right corner banger to score the 1-0 KC. After Weber’s goal, KC had numerous chances to score but their attack couldn’t connect. OL Reigns’ game came through Tziarra King associating with Fishlock, they had also a few chances but could not capitalize on them, they were very sloppy on the attack.
In the 32nd minute, former Orlando Pride, Jordyn Listro, brought down King in the box and the ref, called out a Penalty. In post game press conference Huw Williams’ mentioned that Listro felt bad about the situation but he ass but mentioned, that Listro is a key depth weapon for that KC midfield and she is quite an incredible talent. Fishlock, converted the penalty and score was even 1-1.
In the second half, chances poured over from both squads again but neither could connect. Both squads GK’s Barnhart and Bardsley had key saves throughout the game, making it even most of the second half. Both teams’ couldn’t take that extra step to finish the play with accuracy.
In the 84th minute, it was OL Reign’s corner and Jimenez headed the ball over beating Barnhart to give the OL Reign that advantage and the 2-1 win. During the post game press conference, Coach Williams mentioned that this tournament prepared the team for the regular season and they will do their best. Also he mentioned the importance that was playing with a crowd supporting the team, that is going to speak volumes during the regular season.
