In a highly predicted game to kick off the 2024 season, Austin FC faced off against Minnesota United FC at the iconic Q2 Stadium in Austin, Texas, on Saturday night, February 24th. With expectations high for the home team to show significant improvement from last season, the pressure was on Austin FC to deliver a win for their loyal fans. However, despite effort, Austin fell short, yielding to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Minnesota.
From the outset, it was clear that Minnesota United FC came into the match with a determined mindset. During the first 30 minutes of play, they relentlessly attacked Austin’s defense, amassing six goal-scoring opportunities. Yet, Austin’s goalkeeper Brad Stuver, known for his heroic saves in past seasons, stood firm, denying Minnesota any chance of taking the lead.
However, Minnesota’s persistence eventually paid off in the 33rd minute when midfielder Robin Lod found the back of the net, beating Stuver with a well-placed shot. Despite his best efforts, Stuver was unable to stop Lod’s precise finish, giving Minnesota the lead heading into halftime.
The second half saw Minnesota continue to assert their dominance, controlling possession and stifling Austin’s attempts to mount a comeback. In the 90th minute, Minnesota executed a clinical play that resulted in Alejandro Bran doubling their lead, leaving Austin with a mountain to climb.
Austin FC did manage to pull one back in the dying moments of the game, with Guilherme Biro finding the back of the net in the 94th minute. However, it was too little, too late for the home team as Minnesota United FC held on for the win.
The result leaves Austin FC and their fans disappointed, as many had hoped for a triumphant start to the season. Questions will undoubtedly be raised about the team’s ability to compete at a high level, especially after failing to secure a victory on their home turf.
