Major League Soccer is back, and so is the fifth season of Los Angeles Football Club. With a preseason that included two defeats, one draw, and a 6-1 victory, the Black and Gold returned to Bank of California Stadium looking to improve its results from the previous season which included an absence from the playoffs, numerous injuries, and 5-2 defeat against today’s opponent.
With Steve Cherundolo in charge, it is clear that the midfield and defense has more variety than ever, Maxime Crepeau will be the starting goalkeeper (leaving Tomas Romero as the last option), and Carlos Vela’s future is uncertain
The starting line up had Maxime Crepeau in goal, Mamadou Fall and Jesus Murillo as central defenders, Franco Escobar and Diego Palacios in the wings; midfield with Ilie Sanchez, Jose Cifuentes, and Kellyn Acosta; the three in front were “Mahala” Opoku, Brian Rodriguez, and Carlos Vela.
A handball in the area ended in a penalty and a goal by Carlos Vela, this at the 29t minute. He scored minutes later after a great counter-attack and an assist by Jose Cifuentes.
Two of the most loved players entered in the 72t minute. Latif Blessing and Cristian Arango played for around 20 minutes, and the Banc reacted with a loud reception.
Five minutes of the second half were enough for a Carlos Vela third goal. Hat trick for the Mexican striker. Great performance that raises questions about his continuity. Outstanding shot from the left side of the area. Thus, the Black and Gold earned its first victory of the season.
Great performance by the defense commanded by Jesus Murillo, Franco Escobar showing good skills, Ilie Sanchez staling many balls, and Carlos Vela stealing the show with a hat trick.
LAFC will host the Portland Timbers at the Banc next Sunday.
