Orlando Pride rescued a 1-1 draw against the thorns at home in Exploria Stadium. Jodie Taylor scored her second goal, and the draw stands as the third match in a row under Coach Burleigh that Orlando took points. Burleigh is in a 3-game unbeaten streak.
In the first half, Orlando Pride came out swinging. Orlando controlled most of the possession in the first half and had opportunities to score from the left flank with Courtney Petersen and from an outstanding performance by Marissa Viggiano. Marissa helped Gunny in recouping turnovers from Portland and going on the counter, therefore, creating chances in attack for the Pride.
In the 13th minute, in one of the several plays created by the Pride, Petersen sent a beautiful cross into the Thorns’ box and Jodie Taylor just headed the ball in for a true GOLAZO. Exploria stadium erupted. 1-0 Pride.
Orlando Pride had the momentum of the game, but we also saw Portland create some chances in attack. Simone Charley her speed and ability truly showed but were met by a solid Orlando backline that neutralized every single attacking play created by Portland.
In the 26th minute, Leroux had a chance to score by bringing the ball forward to Portland’s top of the box; she was not able to control the ball fully. After Leroux’s attempt to score, Portland had two chances to score and those were countered by two outstanding saves from Ashlyn Harris.
In the second half, Portland dominated possession, and Orlando’s backline again solid outback and stopping Charley and Rocky Rodriguez on their tracks. Frustration seemed to plague the game, especially on Portland’s side. The game became extra physical, and with unnecessary calls against Orlando’s players.
In the 78th minute, from a set-piece, Simone Charley scored. Exploria stadium became silent. The striker outjumped the Orlando backline and head it is clear for a true GOLAZO. Portland found the late equalizer. 1-1.
Now, was the result at home disappointing? Yes, it was. Orlando at home, especially with the BLACK SWANS rooting from minute 1, all home games must win. Especially when the Pride had players back from injury and international duty. On the bright side, Coach Burleigh is still undefeated, and you can tell the players are delighted to play with more freedom. Also, defensively the Pride has improved tremendously. With the additions of Turner as a starter, and Petersen unstoppable on the left-wing, Orlando showed how compact and solid they can be defensively especially against opponents with a plethora of attacking weapons like Portland.
Next for the Pride is the Washington Spirit at Audi field.
