Miami… Eliminated?
While a loss doesn’t directly eliminate Miami, they’ve entered the stage of the season where they simply cannot afford to drop points – and anything short of a loss will eliminate them from playoff contention, maybe not mathematically, but realistically.
Inter Miami’s 33 points with 3 matches left means they have a maximum of 42 points on the season. The current 9th place team is CF Montreal at 38 points, but New York City FC and DC United are right behind them with 38 and 37 points, respectively.
Those two sides play each other on Saturday, but DC doesn’t have a Decision Day match. Nonetheless, the two sides have to split points one way or another, but for Miami that does mean that at least one of the two teams have to leave Saturday with points earned. Not ideal.
If Miami were to draw on Saturday to FC Cincinnati, they would be eliminated with any of the following:
Montreal win vs Portland AND Chicago win/draw vs Charlotte
NYCFC win vs DC, Montreal win vs Portland OR Chicago win/draw vs Charlotte.
With a FC Cincinnati win, Miami would be eliminated with any of the following:
Montreal win vs Portland
NYCFC win vs DC
DC win vs NYCFC
RBNY win vs Toronto
In summation – FC Cincinnati coming away with points in Miami will, while not officially, eliminate Messi from playoffs – poetically after it was Messi and Inter Miami CF that eliminated the Orange and Blue from the US Open Cup months ago.
International Break
After Saturday’s match, another FIFA International Break will commence. At the time of writing this, three FC Cincinnati players have been called up to their National Teams – Junior Moreno (Venezuela), Yerson Mosquera (Colombia), Santiago Arias (Colombia). Still waiting for potential call-ups for Aaron Boupendza (Gabon, 21 caps, 5 goals) and Marco Angulo (Ecuador, 2 caps), as those National Teams have yet to release their rosters.
