BREAKING! Red Bull New York Sign Striker Jorge Cabezas Hurtado on Loan from Watford

On deadline day of the secondary transfer window in MLS, Red Bull New York has secured its second signing of the window, an attacking option to play next to DP Dante Vanzeir in the team’s 4-2-2-2 formation.

As first reported by Gustavo Guimarães earlier today at Red Bull manager Troy Lesesne’s media availability, Red Bull has signed 19-year-old striker Jorge Cabezas Hurtado on loan from Watford of the Championship.

Hurtado, a teammate of recent Red Bull signing J.J. Mina with the Colombian U20s, spent last season back on loan with his Colombian side Independiente Medellín. In the limited game time back in Colombia, Hurtado got 10 appearances (369′), four of which came in Copa Libertadores.

As an 18-year-old in the second tier of Colombian football with childhood club CD Real Cartagena, Hurtado scored four goals in 17 appearances (1,073′) in 2022 before his move to Watford in January of 2023 for an undisclosed fee.

Red Bull has been in dire need of an additional goal scorer to take the reigns next to their Belgian striker. This season, Red Bull have only scored 22 goals in 23 games, which is the third WORST in the Eastern Conference.

This will not be the big name fans were hoping for, but if Hurtado can take the chances he’s given by manager Troy Lesesne and the coaching staff, Red Bull might have a keeper on their hands, if they want to sign him permanently in the winter.

UPDATE!

Red Bull does NOT have a buy option for Jorge Cabezas Hurtado at the end of the loan per Pipe Sierra. That doesn’t mean Red Bull can’t purchase him if they like him following the loan.

However, Hurtado’s contract does run until 2029 with Watford FC which will make it hard to make any deal permanent happen in January 2024.
