In a culminating game at Q2 Stadium, Austin FC faced off against D.C. United in a match that carried immense pressure. The outcome of this game was seen as Austin’s last hope for securing a slim chance at participating in the 2023 playoffs. With rain looming in the forecast, the stage was set for a crucial encounter that would leave fans on the edge of their seats.

The referee’s whistle marked the commencement of the game promptly at 7:30 p.m., and it didn’t take long for Austin FC to make their intentions clear. Just 11 minutes into the match, the home crowd erupted in joy as Will Bruin found the back of the net. It was a familiar sight for Austin supporters, as the team often aimed to start with an early goal, only to struggle to maintain their momentum throughout the rest of the match.

As the early goal set the tone, fans were left wondering if this time would be different, or if Austin would once again allow their opponents to stage a late-game comeback.

Captain Sebastian Driussi put those doubts to rest in the 21st minute, extending Austin’s lead to 2-0. The first half was all Austin, with D.C. United struggled to find a foothold in the game.

The second half saw no respite for the visitors, as Austin FC continued to dominate. In the 64th minute, Matt Hedges, who had entered the game just 10 minutes earlier, netted Austin’s third goal of the night. By the time the clock reached the 90th minute, fans were elated, knowing that victory was secured.

This win held a special significance for Austin FC, as it marked their first triumph since facing Sporting KC back in July. With only two matches left in the season, the burning question is whether Austin can maintain the same level of play in the games that follow. The tight schedule and limited recovery time between matches pose a challenge for the players. Despite some injuries during this match, no players have been ruled out for the upcoming fixtures.

The hope of Austin FC fans now rests on the team’s ability to finish the season strong. The victory against D.C. United rekindles the belief that they can defy the odds and make a late push for a playoff spot.
