After this NWSL weekend, the Chicago Red Stars are sitting in 5th place in the standings with 25 points. Now back on a normal game schedule, Chicago is looking to get back into a groove. With 6 games remaining, there is no time to waste. They have to keep getting points in order to stay above the playoff line which is cutoff after six teams.
The Match
The Red Stars made their way back to Harrison, New Jersey to take on Gotham FC at Red Bull Arena. Gotham, who were near the top of the table, have struggled as of late. Their last win was against the Red Stars at home on July 25.
Chicago brought the momentum to start with a shot from Casey Krueger that bounced off the post. The team was playing well and were able to intercept many of Gotham’s passes as they attempted to transition. Chicago held 45% possession in the first half and had 3 shots on target. Gotham did not have a single shot on target in the first half.
Shortly after the first half, the Red Stars looked to have the opening goal from Kealia Watt, but she was called offside. Chicago was really looking to push down the left side of Gotham and they found openings on their backline as Gotham players were joining the attack. Gotham keeper Sheridan was able to make a great save to deny Watt of a goal midway through the second half.
As many chances as Chicago had, the defense of Gotham held strong and did not allow a goal. The match ended in a 0-0 draw with each team picking up a point.
What’s Next
The Red Stars will go again on Friday September 10th in Houston at 7:30 PM CT (8:30 PM ET). After that game, they will have just over 2 weeks until their next game. Some USWNT members will be traveling to Ohio during that time frame for 2 international friendly matches against Paraguay.
