After just under two weeks off since their first regular-season match, the Portland Thorns returned to action in their Cascadia Clash with OL Reign. The Reign have had more activity in the past few weeks, by playing 4 games in 14 days. As one of the best rivalries in the league, the teams always bring excitement whenever they face off and Friday’s match was no different.
Thorns defender Becky Sauerbrunn was available for selection tonight after recovering from her injury, however, she did not play. Reign forward Megan Rapinoe was also available after her recovery and was called on in the second half.
Portland’s best chance of the first half came from forwarding Sophia Smith but the Reign goalkeeper read it all the way. Reign forward Bethany Balcer had a shot that bounced off the post and was headed away by Meghan Klingenburg to keep the score level.
The Thorns were more lethal to start the second half, creating strong offensive possessions. Morgan Weaver caused trouble for the visiting defense with her runs on the pitch. In the 52nd minute, a Weaver shot was blocked by a sliding Lauren Barnes. The ball bounced over the visiting team goalkeeper and off the post, which would have been the match’s first goal.
Both teams may be frustrated with the chances missed and it is something they will look to improve going forward. In fact, head coach Rhian Wilkinson was a little frustrated in the post-game. She wants the squad to be a little more clinical and follow their shots. She called the result fair but noted those few things that will keep her up at night.
The Thorns will have somewhat of a short turnaround as they will play the Washington Spirit at home on Wednesday, May 18th at 7:00 pm PT.
